I have always hated unsolicited “garbage senders”. From the olden days of junk mail in my college mailbox to email spam today, it basically did nothing but 1)force me to buy a shredder, and 2)force me to buy anti-spam software.
Now I find that my site is slowly populated with spam as well. What really concerns me is WHO is actually doing it – for a while now I have been removing two “contributors” to comments on my site – one called himself onyeoru onyeze, with an address at obihart@onebox.com, and another didn’t even bother to leave a name – just a link to mugu@mugu.com…
Doing a search today I discover that both these addresses seem real shady, especially it appears that their only existence is on guestbooks on the internet, and always comments that do not make any sense…
Then an alarming note – one post by mugu@mugu.com actually contains nothing but racist opinion (while praising Saddam Hussein), while the other obihart@onebox.com populates the internet with false names supposedly living in Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan (by the way all countries where anti-american sentiments are strong)… here is an example of BOTH of them on the same site… a Russian anti-nuclear site, it seems.
I would be the first to admit, I occasionally shoot off what’s on my mind before thinking, but these identities seem to have been created solely for the purpose of filling a site with garbage. If they really want to make a point, they should not hide behind false e-mail addresses.
Worse yet, I worry that these comments are used as a messaging system for people plotting terroristic acts… I truly hope that is not the case, but just to be careful I have placed their IP address on my BANNED list of “commenters”.
What happened to having a web site just for family and friends to ENJOY…? 🙁
