I was on a plane...

2004_04_smoking_and_airplanes.jpg

and while using the airplane lavatory I noticed the garbage can cover has the logo "No Cigarette Disposal" on it. The logic behind this is understandable - you don't want to have a cigarette inside the garbage can filled with tissue papers, especially on an airplane.

What I don't understand is the fact that smoking has been banned on all flights since the 1990s, and the Airbus 330 was built in the past year or two... so why even bother making a sign that has no purpose at all?

Is there a group of people that is hoping smoking will someday make its way back onto airplanes?

I'm going to put up a sign outside my 4th floor window that says "You should not jump off this building".

Just a thought- not all airplanes are sold to big airline companies. Perhaps the disposal container can not handle hot ashes - and they want to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Then again, jumping off your balcony is tempting!
